Imbolc, also known as Candlemas, is a traditional pagan festival that welcomes the season of Spring, as Yule comes to an end. Traditionally a fire festival, Imbolc encourages us to look for the brightness coming in as the days will become longer, and nature will begin to blossom again.

Imbolc is believed to be the day in which the Cailleach hag from Celtic tradition begins her search for firewood. If she wishes to keep her winter lasting longer she will ensure clear and sunny weather on this day while if she is asleep the weather will turn to rain. It is then hoped to have rain on Imbolc to ensure a shorter winter and to allow Spring to blossom.

February 1st is also the feast day of Brighid or St. Brigid.

In Celtic lore, Brighid was known as the goddess of healing, poetry, and smithcraft and has been incorporated as a patron saint of Ireland.

Ideas to celebrate Imbolc and St Brigid’s Day

  • Look out for signs of springs, like budding flowerings
  • Make crosses and poppets out of rushes
  • Light a Red Candle for some candle magick
  • Incorporate Cinnamon into your day (add as a flavoring, burn some scents)
  • Learn about and honor Brighid

This February 1st is also the date of the New Moon, so there will be extra potent energy during these next few days. This would be a perfect time to cast any rituals or set any intentions that welcome new things into your life or manifest new beginnings.
