Description
Cernunnos Candle Holder
In ancient Celtic and Gallo-Roman religion, Cernunnos is a god depicted with antlers, seated cross-legged, and is associated with stags, horned serpents, dogs and bulls. He is the Gaelic god of beasts and wild places. He is often called the Horned One and worshipped as the “Lord of Wild Things.” Cernunnos is a mediator of man and nature, able to tame predator and prey so they might lie down together.
While Cernunnos is recognized most often through his connection to animals and our own deeply buried, dimly recalled, instinctual animal natures, he is also a tree, forest, and vegetation god in his foliate aspect of The Green Man. His branching antlers symbolize the spreading treetops of the forest as well as his animal nature.
He remains a mysterious deity, as his original mythos has been lost to history.
