Odin on Throne
Odin is a widely revered god in Germanic paganism. In Norse mythology, the source of most surviving information about him, he is associated with wisdom, healing, death, royalty, the gallows, knowledge, war, battle, victory, sorcery, poetry, frenzy, and the runic alphabet. He is the husband of the goddess Frigg and the ruler of the Aesir tribe of deities. He often ventures far from their kingdom of Asgard, on long, solitary wanderings throughout the cosmos on purely self-interested quests. He relentlessly seeks wisdom and values justice, fairness, and respect. He is the divine patron of rules, and also of outcasts.
In Old Norse texts, Odin is depicted as one-eyed and long-bearded, frequently wielding a spear named Gungnir, and wearing a cloak and broad hat. He is often accompanied by animal companions, particularly the wolves Geri and Freki, and the ravens Huginn and Muninn.
The modern English weekday name Wednesday derives from Old English Wōdnesdæg, meaning “day of Wōden” (“Odin’s day”).
