Runes are the letters in a set of related alphabets known as runic alphabets native to the Germanic peoples. More famously, they are known as the language of the Vikings. Runes are an ancient form of oracle and divination. As the story goes, the Norse God Odin was a seeker of knowledge and truth, and he earned the wisdom of the runes by sacrificing himself on Yggdrasil—the Tree of Life—for nine days and nine nights. Today, the runes can used for inner growth and spiritual guidance, as well as to strengthen intuition.
So how do you use them? It’s up to you! Runes are entirely personal, and you can cast—aka “use”—them however you like. Here are some popular methods:
- A three-rune cast—Focus on your question or intention. Gently shake the bag to shuffle the runes. Without looking, pull three runes out and place them in front of you. Read from left to right. This is a very easy way to read your past, present, and future, or it can represent your current issue, obstacles to overcome, or the best pathway ahead.
- Shake & drop—Take all of the runes out of the bag and hold them in your hands. Focus on your question or intention. Now shake! Any runes that fall are your answers.
- Follow your intuition—Because there isn’t an official way to cast runes, follow your intuition and see what guides you. Maybe you’ll like blind-picking one rune with no question in mind, or maybe you’ll like shaking them in your hands until there’s only one remaining. There are no rules!
