Thor, God of Thunder
Thor (Old Norse: Þórr) is the Norse god of thunder, the sky, and agriculture. He wields the hammer Mjölnir and is associated with lightning, thunder, storms, sacred groves and trees, strength, the protection of humankind, hallowing, and fertility.
He is the son of Odin, chief of the gods, and Odin’s consort Jord (Earth). He is husband of the fertility goddess Sif, who is the mother of his son Modi and daughter Thrud. His other son, Magni, may be from a union with the giantess Jarnsaxa.
The word “Thursday” originates from him. In Old English, it was called þunresdæġ, which means “Þunor’s day” (“Thor’s day”).
