“See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.”
This expression is generally used in reference to those who choose to turn a blind eye to wrongdoings, but its original meaning is to teach prudence and the importance of avoiding evil. It is believed that Buddhist monks brought the expression from India to Japan by way of China around the 8th century.
Hotei or Pu-Tai is better known as the Laughing Buddha. The image of Hotei is based on a Chinese Zen monk who lived over 1000 years ago. Many regarded him a future Buddha because of his benevolent nature. It was due to his large protruding stomach and smile that he came to be known as the Laughing Buddha.
