See/Hear/Speak No Evil Ganeshas
“See no evil. Hear no evil. Speak no evil.”
This expression is generally used in reference to those who choose to turn a blind eye to wrongdoings, but its original meaning is to teach prudence and the importance of avoiding evil. It is believed that Buddhist monks brought the expression from India to Japan by way of China around the 8th century.
Ganesha (also Ganesa or Ganapati) is one of the most important gods in Hinduism. He is the Lord of Good Fortune who provides prosperity, fortune, and success. He is the Lord of Beginnings and the Remover of Obstacles of both material and spiritual kinds. Interestingly, he also places obstacles in the path of those who need to be checked. Ganesha is the patron of writers, travelers, students, and commerce, and he removes obstacles blocking new projects. This deity is fond of sweets, to the slight detriment of his figure. Ganesha is easily recognized with his elephant head and human body, representing the soul (atman) and the physical (maya). His name literally means “Lord of Gana.” Ganesha was entrusted by Shiva with the leadership of the Ganas, Shiva’s dwarfish, rowdy retinue, in compensation for the loss of his human head.
