Description

Poseidon, God of the Sea

In Ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was the god of the sea, storms, earthquakes, and horses. Poseidon was the protector of sailors and anyone who worked or traveled at sea. According to some versions of the ancient Greek creation story, Poseidon became lord of the sea after he and his two brothers, Zeus and Hades, defeated their father Cronos (also spelled Kronos or Cronus) and divided his kingdom up amongst themselves.

Of all the Greek gods, Poseidon is depicted as being among the most bad-tempered and grumpy of all the gods who lived on Mount Olympus. This reflects the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of the sea. In some Greek legends, Poseidon works against the heroes of the story and tries to hamper their journey using storms.

Poseidon’s Roman equivalent is Neptune.
