Description
Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt
In ancient Greek religion and mythology, Artemis (Greek: Ἄρτεμις) is the goddess of the hunt, the wilderness, wild animals, nature, vegetation, childbirth, care of children, and chastity. She is also a goddess of childbirth, and the protectress of the girl child up to the age of marriage. In later times, she was identified with Selene, the personification of the Moon. She was often said to roam the forests and mountains, attended by her entourage of nymphs. In Greek tradition, Artemis is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. In most accounts, the twins are the products of an extramarital liaison.
In ancient art, Artemis is usually depicted as a girl or young maiden with a hunting bow and quiver of arrows. The goddess Diana is her Roman equivalent.
